HKSS Cultural Night 2007-2008

attachments/200805/5943405586.jpgUCLA Hong Kong Student Society (HKSS) is thrilled to invite you to Hong Kong Culture Night 2008!

HKSS consists of 300+ passionate Hong Kong students who strive to advocate cultural and political awareness throughout the UCLA campus. Acknowledging the need of presenting Hong Kong culture in an entertaining and inspiring way, we feel compelled to launch our second annual Hong Kong Culture Night (HKCN).

HKCN will be our organization’s largest programmed event of the year. The event will feature a thought- provoking drama, music performances, and dances to demonstrate our generation’s talents, perspectives, and passion towards the community. It is our desire to immerse our audience in every facet of the dynamic Hong Kong culture.

For the HKCN, we are producing a drama production involving over 100 dedicated members from the administration to the production levels. Every aspect of the show, from the script, the props, stage/light/audio design to the performances, is completely student-run. Since early January, our performers have begun practicing to ensure the perfection of the evening of May 16th.

This year we are trying to bring back HKCN to our fellow students and friends of UCLA. The path is rough, yet our passion is strong. Our wish to bring HKSS’s vision to the community would only be attained with everyones' support. This show will surely live beyond its one night and recreate a legacy for our future generations to follow.

 An Abstract of the Drama:

“Love ain’t a game”

A group of young people come together and produce a play named “No Games Please”. Each of them, despite similar background, has a particular reason or purpose for joining this play. Robert, the director of this play, hopes to produce something metaphysical and critical of materialistic social phenomena after breaking up with his girlfriend Lulu. The producer Samuel is flirtatious, and he is obsessed with stock investment for easy money. Paula joined the play because she doesn’t have anything particularly important in her life, and that she hopes doing a play can kill some time. Alex and James, however, become the actors because they feel like this is the time for them to get to know some girls and extend their own social circle. Gigi and Cici, without much pulses in their life, wish to substantiate their boring routine by becoming the actresses.

Ambitiously and naturally, they come together to unveil the very mystic page of sophistication, and look forward to finding and understanding what true love is. Alex demonstrates his hat-tricks to impress Gigi; However, Gigi only cares for Robert. Not until the reappearance of Robert’s ex-girlfriend did he think about his love life seriously.

Romantic dramas colorize the play colossally. Courtships happen between boys and girls, but this is nothing as pure as true love in fairy tales. Romantic love has now become a game of deception and manipulation, where one side does not give up until an overwhelming triumph.Amen to Darwinism, only the fittest will survive; only the dominator deserves a ripen fruit. Therefore, to be able to love means to be able to win the love. Artifice becomes a necessary armor for a love-gamer to equip. “Love ain’t a game” is just a moribund justification of the weak for their failure.
